A Rogers Park man is charged with sexually assaulting two women at knifepoint on the North Side — one this week and another on the day after Christmas, Chicago police said. He is also being eyed in other sexual assault cases in the area that CPD has publicly linked to a single crime pattern.
Tymarion Averyhart, 19, will appear for a detention hearing on Sunday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
CPD said he’s the man who raped a 21-year-old woman at knifepoint in the 1800 block of West Lunt on Thursday night. Cops arrested him minutes after the attack, about a block from the crime scene.
Officers crossed paths with a victim during a traffic stop just across the border in Evanston around 11:07 p.m. She told them that a man had just pulled out a knife and sexually assaulted her as she walked in a gangway, according to a police statement.
Other officers located Averyhart in the 1800 block of West Greenleaf moments later and took him into custody.
Like the serial rapist that police warned about days earlier, Averyhart had a bike and armed himself with a knife, leading investigators to immediately begin looking for links between him and the earlier cases.
For now, he is only charged with one of the earlier assaults: the December 26, 2024, rape of a 27-year-old woman in the 6200 block of North Bell. Averyhart allegedly broke into a woman’s first-floor residence around 2:50 a.m. and “made unlawful sexual contact” with her while armed with a knife, a CPD alert said. He allegedly took the woman’s keys and PlayStation before leaving.
He is also charged with committing two residential burglaries on the same block, one on December 28 and the other on January 10, police said Saturday.
Prosecutors have charged him with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, committing a sex offense during a home invasion, aggravated armed kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint, and three counts of residential burglary.
CPD said he lives in the 6200 block of North Hermitage, just east of where police said the serial rapist had been prowling and just west of where Thursday’s attack occurred.
The two unsolved crimes that police had grouped under the crime pattern are:
- A March 25 attack in the 6200 block of North Artesian. CPD said a man displayed a knife and stole an item from a woman as she entered her building. About 20 minutes later, he targeted another woman as she entered a residence in the 6200 block of North Oakley. He robbed her and “committed unlawful sexual contact” before leaving the area, police said in an alert.
- The April 25 attack of a woman in the 6100 block of North Campbell. Once again, a woman was walking into her residence when the man confronted her with a knife, “committed unlawful sexual contact,” and took her valuables.
