4 juveniles face felony charges in violent park attack that injured 2 teens

Four juveniles have been charged in connection with a brutal group attack inside Munroe Park that left two 15-year-old boys hospitalized earlier this month, according to Chicago police. Part of the attack was caught on video.

The charges follow the August 16 assault, when, according to CPD, a large group of teens battered the victims with fists, a baseball bat, and a paintball gun around 10:40 p.m.

A video showing part of the attack begins with one victim cowering on the ground as several assailants kick and punch him. He gets up and runs a short distance, but is dragged back down in the middle of the park’s baseball field. The beating intensifies as one attacker fires a paintball gun at close range, another leaps and lands feet-first near the boy’s knees, and a third appears to spray something into his face. Remarkably, the boy eventually springs to his feet and jogs away as the recording ends.

Police said one victim was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and the other to Christ Hospital. Their conditions were not known.

On August 25 and August 26, detectives took four teenage boys into custody:

  • A 16-year-old is charged with two felony counts of mob action, one felony count of aggravated battery in a public place, and one misdemeanor count of battery causing bodily harm.
  • A 15-year-old is charged with two felony counts of mob action, one felony count of aggravated battery in a public place, and one misdemeanor count of battery causing bodily harm.
  • Another 15-year-old is charged with one felony count of mob action and one misdemeanor count of battery causing bodily harm.
  • A 14-year-old is charged with one felony count of mob action and one misdemeanor count of battery causing bodily harm.

No other information was available about the accused teenagers because juvenile court proceedings are shielded from public review by state law.
