Illinois State Police investigators needed less than 24 hours to identify and arrest the man they say opened fire during a road rage confrontation on the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway.
Prosecutors said it started when 33-year-old Cameron Jackson-Bey of Homewood merged in front of another driver near 71st Street around 3:35 p.m. on August 15. Jackson-Bey slammed on his brakes, stopped in the middle of the expressway, got out, and argued with the driver he cut off, prosecutors said in a detention petition.
As that unfolded, another motorist, who would become the victim in the shooting attempt, tried to pass the stopped cars, officials said. The victim told investigators he saw Jackson-Bey seated in his vehicle with a gun on his lap. Jackson-Bey then allegedly extended his arm across the passenger seat and aimed the pistol at the victim, who heard a shot fire as he drove past.
No one was injured.
By the next day, state police had identified and tracked down Jackson-Bey. When they arrested him, prosecutors said, they recovered a loaded handgun from under his driver’s seat. The firearm’s magazine was missing one round, according to the allegations.
Jackson-Bey is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. Judge Shauna Boliker granted the state’s request to keep him detained.
