A 32-year-old man was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in Rogers Park after at least one attacker fired more than a dozen rounds, Chicago police and witnesses said.
Officers responding to the 1600 block of West Estes Street around 2:01 a.m. for reports of gunfire found the victim outside with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to a CPD media statement. Paramedics took him to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses told officers they heard over a dozen shots during the attack. Investigators recovered numerous shell casings at the scene, including some from a rifle.
Police radio traffic indicated an initial description of the shooter as a Black male with short hair, wearing a black T-shirt and jean shorts. He was last seen leaving the area on foot.
Detectives were on scene for several hours, collecting evidence and photographing the crime scene along the residential block. No one is in custody.
Wednesday’s victim is the 14th person shot in Rogers Park so far this year and the third to die from their wounds. The neighborhood’s shooting tally is slightly lower than at this point in 2024, when 15 people had been shot, and well below 2023’s total of 28 victims by mid-August. In 2022, the number stood at 17, and in 2021, it was 16.
