18-year-old gets 20 years for murdering robbery victim — while on parole for attempted murder

A South Side man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for murdering another man during an armed robbery last year. Devon Holly, who turned 18 late last month, was already on juvenile parole for attempted murder when he killed the man.

Holly built a substantial and serious criminal record before even reaching adulthood, officials said. At the age of 16, he was adjudicated in juvenile court for attempted murder in 2021 and was later released on parole. While on parole, prosecutors charged him with possessing a stolen motor vehicle, but they dropped the charges on January 25, 2024.

Just six days later, on January 31, still on parole for attempted murder, Holly lured 18-year-old Davion Borders to an apartment building in the 700 block of East 60th Street with the promise of selling him gym shoes, prosecutors claimed. Borders met Holly’s sister in the lobby, and they rode an elevator to the fourth floor. There, prosecutors said, Holly appeared in a ski mask, grabbed Borders’ phone, and demanded his password before stabbing him repeatedly during a struggle.

While Borders was stabbed throughout his body, prosecutors said the fatal blow appeared to be a knife wound to his heart. Police found a 6-inch serrated steak knife blade embedded in his body.

Witnesses directed Chicago police officers to a 17th-floor apartment where cops found blood on the door and in the hallway. Inside, they found Holly hiding under bedsheets with fresh cuts on his hands, blood on his shoes, and Borders’ phone in his possession, officials said.

Investigators also found the broken handle of a knife in the apartment, along with Borders’ backpack and the shoes that had been offered for sale.

Judge Alfredo Maldonado oversaw the case and sentenced Holly, who must serve 100% of his prison sentence.
