5 dead, 25 injured in weekend violence, but those numbers will likely to go higher

Chicago saw five murders over the weekend with 25 survivors of shootings, according to preliminary information from the Chicago police department. Those numbers are likely to go higher by 2 or 3 murders as detectives and the medical examiner’s office investigate the deaths of two children and a woman who were found dead in Lake Michigan on Saturday.

For now, though, the weekend’s performance is among the best for the same weekend since 2015, according to HeyJackass, a site that independently tracks city violence using open-source and official data. Over the past decade, only 2023 had fewer victims (1 dead, 25 injured) and 2019 had the same number of victims (6 dead, 24 wounded)

CPD said the deaths of the woman and children found in the Lake between 5700 and 6300 south “appear to be connected and appear to stem from a domestic dispute.”

The first discovery came at 11:23 a.m., when first responders pulled an infant girl from the water in the 5700 block of South Lake Shore Drive. As of Sunday morning, the medical examiner had not listed her age.

Three hours later, at 2:23 p.m., two more bodies were found nearly a mile south. Police said a 6-year-old boy was recovered from the lake in the 6300 block of East Hayes Drive, and a 31-year-old woman was pulled from the water in the same area. Medical examiner records, however, list the woman as being found about a block south from the boy.

CPD radio traffic indicates that police also recovered a baby seat, two blankets, and a diaper bag in the park about a block south of La Rabida Children’s Hospital, 6501 South Promontory Drive, not far from 67th Street Beach.

Police have not said why they believe the deaths are connected, why they are tied to a domestic dispute, how the victims ended up spread over such a distance, or whether detectives are seeking any suspects.

CPD responded to two mass shootings, defined as four or more people shot during a single event. Four men were shot in the 6600 block of South Halsted on Friday evening. Early Monday, four more men were injured during a shootout in the 5300 block of West North Avenue. All of the victims from both cases survived.

Editor’s note: HeyJackass data includes shootings that occur on expressways within city limits, which CPD does not count because the Illinois State Police investigates those incidents. For statistical purposes, the site defines “weekend” as noon Friday to 6 a.m. Monday. CPD also uses a narrower window as its definition of “weekend”: 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. Also, the weekend’s totals may rise or fall slightly as officials investigate incidents and victims succumb to injuries.
