An armored car guard shot a man who stole money from them in the Loop on Wednesday morning, sending lunchtime crowds scattering and leaving a Brink’s truck surrounded by crime scene tape on State Street.

Witnesses said it began around 11:17 a.m. when a man attacked the guard, punching him in the face and grabbing at least one bag of money outside Saks Off 5th at 6 South State Street. The guard reportedly responded by pulling his firearm and firing at least three shots.

The wounded suspect managed to flee down into the Washington Blue Line station, where officers found him along with stolen cash. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to his buttocks and arm. His age was not immediately available, but police said he appeared to be an adult.

He is the fifth person shot in the Loop this year. That figure is far below the pace of the past few years, when downtown shootings spiked during and after the pandemic. By this time last year, there had already been 10 shooting victims downtown. There were 12 at this point in 2023, 31 in 2022, 22 in 2021, 12 in 2020, and five in 2019.
