Man charged with fatally stabbing woman inside their Avondale home

Victor Hernandez (Chicago Police Department, Multiplottr)

A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in Avondale earlier this week.

Victor Hernandez is scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing on Saturday afternoon, when prosecutors are expected to provide additional details about the case.

Chicago police officers called to the 2800 block of North Woodard Street around 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday found 55-year-old Vanessa Hernandez with multiple stab wounds to her face, neck, arm, and chest, according to preliminary information from CPD.

Police said the woman had been involved in a “physical altercation with an unknown male offender” who pulled a knife and attacked her. Investigators later recovered a knife from a rear porch area as evidence.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office listed the Woodard Street address as Vanessa Hernandez’s home.

About two hours after the attack, officers arrested Victor Hernandez in the 2200 block of South Lake Shore Drive. He lived in the same home as the victim, and initial reports indicate he is her son.

He is charged with two counts of murder.
