The Halloween weekend in Chicago ended with two people murdered and 21 others wounded by gunfire—a slight uptick from the same weekend last year but far below the violence seen during the pandemic years.
With 23 total victims, the weekend ranks fourth-best for the same weekend since 2015, according to HeyJackass, a website that tracks Chicago shootings using police data and public reports. The totals could still change if more victims are found or if any of the wounded succumb to their injuries. The city’s lowest count for the weekend came in 2017, with 20 victims.
Four of this weekend’s victims were injured early Sunday during a mass shooting in Wrigleyville. It’s the city’s first mass shooting, defined as four or more shot during a single event, since four people were injured on the Division Street nightlife strip on October 17.
Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 1:45 a.m. in the 3400 block of North Clark Street, a busy nightlife corridor lined with bars and restaurants. They found three victims at the scene, and a fourth later arrived at Thorek Hospital.
Surveillance footage showed the suspected gunman, described only as a man wearing a red hoodie and light-colored jeans, fleeing north on Clark Street in a white Chevrolet pickup truck.
According to police, a 29-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were each shot in the arm, while a 29-year-old woman was shot in the leg. All three were taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition. A 25-year-old man who was sitting in a parked car was shot in the shoulder and went to Thorek Hospital on his own.

Editor’s note: HeyJackass data includes shootings that occur on expressways within city limits, which CPD does not count because the Illinois State Police investigates those incidents. For statistical purposes, the site defines “weekend” as noon Friday to 6 a.m. Monday. CPD also uses a narrower window as its definition of “weekend”: 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. Also, the weekend’s totals may rise or fall slightly as officials investigate incidents and victims succumb to injuries.
