Six men rob victim at gunpoint in West Loop; 2nd robbery reported nearby

Chicago police are investigating two armed robberies reported late Sunday night and early Monday in and near the West Loop.

The first robbery was reported around 9:55 p.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of West Lake Street. Officers responded to a call of a robbery with a firearm and spoke with a 22-year-old man who said he was standing on a sidewalk when six offenders arrived in two vehicles.

According to police, one of the robbers displayed a pistol and demanded the victim’s property, including his phone. Another offender punched the victim in the face with a closed fist. The man declined medical attention at the scene, CPD said.

The crew in that incident was described only as Black males who fled in a black sedan, possibly a Kia, and a second unidentified vehicle. Area Three Detectives are investigating.

A few hours later, at about 1:35 a.m. Monday, a 27-year-old man was targeted by armed robbers near his residence in the 100 block of North Morgan Street. He told police he was on the sidewalk when two men exited a silver or gray Jeep and tried to take his property by force while armed with a firearm.

Police said the victim was able to get inside his residential building before losing anything to the men, prompting the offenders to flee empty-handed.

The robbers in the second holdup were described as Black males, one was wearing a black jacket and gray pants and the other was dressed entirely in black. They fled west on Randolph Street from Morgan Street. Area Three Detectives are also handling that investigation.

Police did not indicate whether the two robberies are believed to be connected.
