A 36-year-old man who was shot on a Rogers Park street Tuesday night has a long and violent history in the same neighborhood, including prison sentences for firing at a car full of people and shooting someone in an earlier case.
Officers with the Chicago Police Department were patrolling near the Howard CTA station when they reported hearing gunshots around 9:22 p.m. Within moments, 911 callers directed police to the 7600 block of North Paulina Street, where a gunman had shot the 36-year-old victim in the street.
The wounded man ran into a nearby apartment building after being struck. He reportedly lost a significant amount of blood inside the building before first responders arrived. Paramedics transported him to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where police said he was listed in critical condition.
Officers located eight shell casings at the scene. CPD did not release a description of the gunman.
He is the third person shot this year in Rogers Park. On February 15, a 17-year-old boy was shot one block away in the 7700 block of North Paulina Street.
While CWB Chicago does not identify crime victims by name, records show the man wounded Wednesday is no stranger to local shootings, although he has usually been on the other end of the gun.
During the pandemic, he was sent to prison for opening fire on a car full of people in Rogers Park. And court records show he was also convicted of shooting someone in 2006. His conviction history includes three additional gun-related cases.
