Armed robbers fatally shot a 36-year-old man after robbing a Thorntons service station in Brighton Park early Tuesday, according to Chicago police.

The robbers entered the store at 3450 South California Avenue around 2:52 a.m. and demanded money from the register while displaying guns, CPD said.

After collecting cash, the group ran from the store and encountered the 36-year-old man outside. At least one of the robbers opened fire, striking the man in the chest and head, according to preliminary police information. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found multiple shell casings at the scene, and at least one bullet hole was visible in a window of the store. No arrests have been reported, and police have not released descriptions of the suspects. The investigation is ongoing.
