Two teenage boys are recovering after they were shot in Humboldt Park early Wednesday, according to Chicago police. The shooting occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Fairfield Avenue.

In a brief media statement, police said the boys, ages 15 and 17, were standing in an alley when they heard gunfire and realized they had been shot. But reports from officers at the scene indicated the circumstances may have been more complex.

At about 3:04 a.m., officers handling an unrelated incident several blocks away reported hearing gunfire “like crazy” in the distance. They estimated that 20 to 30 shots had been fired. Residents near the scene then began calling 911.

Officers found shell casings in the alley and on a third-floor rear porch of a nearby home, according to police. The rear door of the third-floor unit had been struck by gunfire, and investigators found bullet damage to an interior wall and blood inside one of the bedrooms, officers said.

The 15-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, according to CPD. The 17-year-old was taken to the same hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to his hand.

Around the time of the shooting, officers saw a suspicious vehicle traveling through the alley without license plates and with its lights turned off, according to police radio transmissions. The vehicle sped away and entered the expressway after the gunfire. Officers briefly followed the vehicle but did not pursue it, according to the transmissions. No arrests have been announced.
