CHICAGO — An armed robbery crew shot a man during a holdup in Little Village on Tuesday morning, Chicago police said. He is at least the third person shot during robberies in the city since Saturday afternoon.
Two men were standing near a van in the 2200 block of South Hamlin at 7:08 a.m. when four men armed with rifles or long guns pulled up in a white SUV, according to CPD.
The gunmen got out and demanded the victims’ property. After taking valuables from one man, one of the robbers started shooting toward the victims, police said.
Bullets struck one of the victims throughout his body. CPD said the 37-year-old was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
The police did not release descriptions of the suspects.
Three other armed robberies were reported in the minutes leading up to the shooting. Detectives will work to determine if they were committed by the same crew.
In each case, men armed with large firearms confronted victims on the street. Between about 6:40 a.m. and 7 a.m., robberies were reported in the 1500 block of North Kildare, the 1500 block of North Tripp, and near the intersection of Cortland and Keystone.
On Christmas morning, armed robbers shot a 29-year-old man during a robbery in the 4300 block of West Armitage, Chicago police said. A ShotSpotter gunfire detector first alerted cops to the robbery, which occurred around 7:20 a.m.
On Saturday afternoon, a 68-year-old concealed carry license holder shot and killed a 19-year-old man in the 1700 block of West Cortez. The older man told police that the dead man was among four people who tried to rob him, according to officers at the scene.
CPD never told the public about the robbery aspect of the shooting; however, the department did not include the 19-year-old in its tally of holiday weekend murder victims.
