CHICAGO — A woman has been detained to await trial after prosecutors accused her of shooting the passenger of another car during a road rage confrontation on the Stevenson Expressway. Daisy Estrada, 22, was arrested Friday, more than a year after the shooting unfolded on the inbound ramp at Central Avenue.
Prosecutors said a driver and passenger were headed to work when they got into an altercation with the driver of a white Chevy SUV on December 3, 2022. As the vehicles headed onto the expressway, the SUV’s driver fired shots at the victims’ car, striking the passenger in the neck, according to an Illinois State Police statement.
In court filings, prosecutors said the driver suffered a graze wound, too. But the ISP statement said he was not injured. The passenger recovered.
Investigators identified the gunman’s car and learned that it was registered to Estrada’s father, prosecutors said. A phone number registered to her father was also tracked with the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
However, according to prosecutors, Estrada’s father told the state police that he does not drive his daughter’s car, and her phone was on his cellular plan at the time of the incident.
Estrada received probation sentences for two felonies in 2019, according to court records: aggravated battery of a peace officer and possessing a stolen motor vehicle. Judge David Kelly pointed to her criminal history as one reason he ordered her detention.
She is charged with aggravated battery by discharging a firearm.
