CHICAGO — A bank ATM held its own against a group of sledgehammer-wielding burglars Tuesday morning in Logan Square, but Chicago cops still want to track down the guys who tried to haul away the cash machine’s loot. Another ATM burglary was reported about an hour later in West Town, too, but it’s unclear if the crimes are connected.
The Logan Square burglary attempt unfolded around 3 a.m. at PNC Bank, 3337 West North Avenue. Surveillance images released by Chicago police detectives show a burglar dressed in black raising a sledgehammer next to the drive-thru ATM.
A red Jeep sits idling nearby as the burglar tries but fails to compromise the vault. Another set of pictures shows that at least two men were involved in the caper.
Area Five detectives hope someone will recognize the men and provide the information to investigators. Their phone number is 312-746-7394. Refer to case #JH133273.
In West Town, witnesses reported seeing a man dressed in black breaking into an ATM outside D’Amato’s Bakery, 1124 West Grand, around 4 a.m. The burglar damaged the keypad during the crime, but it wasn’t immediately known if he succeeded in getting money from the machine. He was last seen driving away in a white sedan.
