Chicago police surveillance officers quickly used a series of video feeds to track a bank robber as he fled the Loop on two CTA trains, stopping along the way to pick up the bank’s cash when it fell out of his bag, according to a federal complaint. Guided by the surveillance team, patrol officers arrested Solomon Marshall at the Illinois Medical District stop shortly after the Tuesday morning holdup.
An FBI agent who filed the complaint against Marshall said he entered Fifth Third Bank, 1 South Wacker, around 9:41 a.m. and handed a note to the teller: “Put your hands on your chest walk over and have [sic] fill the bag with money you have 3 minutes no one gets hurt.”
The teller put $776 into the robber’s brown bag, and he bolted out the door.

As Marshall hustled toward the L, he took off several pieces of clothing and stuffed them into the bag, only for the bank’s money to fall out as he made his way east on Arcade Place, an alley-like street that links Wacker Drive and Wells Street, the agent alleged.
CPD’s camera team quickly located him on video as he jumped the turnstile at Washington-Wells, then transferred to a Blue Line at the Thompson Center, according to the agent’s filing. Marshall was still carrying the brown bag, containing the robber’s clothing and $776 cash, when cops arrested him at the Medical District stop, the agent wrote.
He is charged with one count of bank robbery.
Almost exactly one year ago, a bank robber exchanged shots with a security guard while trying to rob the same Fifth Third bank. That robber also dropped the bank’s money and had to waste precious time picking it up. A 48-year-old man is facing federal charges in that case.
