More than 30 rounds fired near casino construction site, killing man (updated)

CHICAGO — A man has died after being shot in a barrage of gunfire near the Bally’s casino construction site in River West on Sunday morning. Chicago police officers found more than 30 shell casings at the scene.

Officers responded to shots fired in the area and found the victim lying unresponsive in the 700 block of North Halsted around 12:46 a.m. As they drove toward the scene, a passerby discovered the victim lying unresponsive in the street. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head and died later in the day at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The police recovered a firearm from the victim. They also found an extended ammunition magazine in his jacket. However, they were not immediately able to identify him. Officials said he appeared to be between 20 and 30 years old.

CPD did not release any additional information about the shooting, such as who shot the man, whether the victim fired any shots or the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
