CHICAGO — Prosecutors are accusing a Chicago man of carjacking two women at gunpoint in under an hour. Judge William Fahy detained Jaquan Dukes, 19, to await trial on two counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, saying that it’s too dangerous to release someone accused of committing two carjackings in 30 minutes.
The first victim, 31, had just pulled up to a gas pump at a station in the 6700 block of South Ashland when Dukes and two other men surrounded her vehicle around 5:15 p.m. on September 9, prosecutors said. One of the men pulled out a gun and ordered her to get out of the driver’s seat. She complied, and the men drove away with her blue Nissan Altima, according to the allegations.
A short time later, another woman was seated in her car with the driver’s door open on the 6000 block of South Aberdeen. She told police a blue car came down her street the wrong way and pulled behind her.
Two men got out of the blue car, allegedly Dukes and an accomplice. The accomplice ordered the woman out of the car at gunpoint, then pistol-whipped her multiple times before pulling her from the vehicle, prosecutors said in a court filing.
Police found the two hijacked cars traveling together later that night. They arrested Dukes after the Nissan crashed and he tried to run away, prosecutors said.
