CHICAGO — Not even two months after being paroled for an armed robbery conviction, Trinidy Mintz carjacked and robbed two men at gunpoint and then crashed the hijacked vehicle in front of Chicago cops, prosecutors say.
Mintz, 22, was released from the Pontiac Correctional Center on September 9 after serving half of the ten-year sentence he received for a 2019 armed robbery, according to state records.
By 11:35 a.m. on November 6, prosecutors allege, he was back to his old habits.
That’s when two men, ages 60 and 49, were washing the older man’s Ford F-150 in an alley behind the 2900 block of West 63rd Street. As they did, Mintz walked up, pointed a gun at the younger man, and took his wallet and phone, prosecutors said in a detention petition. He then directed his gun at the 60-year-old, taking his phone, keys, and truck, according to prosecutors.
The entire robbery and carjacking were caught on video.
One week later, around 3 a.m. Wednesday, CPD’s vehicular hijacking task force located the carjacked truck when its license plate hit on an automatic plate reader along the Dan Ryan.
A patrol unit, stopped for a red light at Wentworth and Cermak, saw the truck pull off the highway and drive past them. It crashed into a light pole as they tried to pull it over.
Prosecutors said Mintz ran from the driver’s seat and pitched a loaded handgun as he tried to escape. Cops found him hiding in a stairwell behind a building in the 2200 block of South Wentworth.
Judge Shauna Boliker granted the state’s detention petition to keep Mintz in custody. The state is also reviewing his parole status in light of the new allegations.
