Man opened fire on group of women from behind, killing 1, injuring another: prosecutors

CHICAGO — Prosecutors are accusing a man of opening fire on a group of women during a dispute on the Fourth of July, leaving one victim dead and another injured, saying he searched the internet for news about the crime.

Dimitri Sanders, 25, was detained by Judge Susana Ortiz during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

In her detention order, Ortiz summarized the allegations, saying Sanders got into a dispute with several women and then shot at them when they had their backs turned in the 900 block of North Leclaire.

Cassandra Sims, 59, died, and a 29-year-old woman was also shot but survived.

Officials said Sanders was identified as the gunman in “multiple” photo line-ups. His phone location data also put him in the area of the shootings at the time of the crime, according to the allegations. Prosecutors said his phone search history showed that he looked up information about the shootings.

Court records show Sanders was charged with felony gun possession in October 2021, but prosecutors reduced that charge to a misdemeanor in a plea deal last year. Sanders received a sentence of two days—time he had already served—by Judge Michael Hood.
