Convenience stores robbed minutes apart in Old Town, Loop

CHICAGO — Police are investigating two convenience store robberies reported minutes apart on Sunday evening, one in the Loop and the other in Old Town.

Two men walked into a mom ‘n’ pop convenience store in the 1600 block of North Wells around 9 p.m. and asked for merchandise kept behind the counter, officials said. The pair went on to spray the cashier in the face with mace before taking merchandise and cash from the register.

A witness saw the suspects climbing into a red SUV in the 100 block of West Eugenie after the robbery. Cops found a cash register drawer on that block, but it did not appear to be from the Wells Street store.

Officers at the scene said the robbers were a Hispanic man standing about 5’8″ tall in a gray hoodie and blue pants and a Black male, 20 to 30 years old, wearing a black hoodie, blue pants, and a surgical mask.

About 15 minutes later, the 7-Eleven at 48 North Wells was robbed. Police said four young males raided the store, taking merchandise and cash registers.

The suspects from the second robbery were a White male and three Black males wearing black jackets and masks, an officer at the scene said.
