CHICAGO — Postal inspectors are asking for a bit of help as they try to identify the man who robbed a mail carrier in Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon.

Ring doorbell video shows what happened around 1 p.m. in the 400 block of West 38th Street:

A postal worker climbs the steps to drop off mail at a home as a man who had been walking near him lurks on the sidewalk. As the mail carrier heads toward the next house, the lurking man pulls out a blade and directs it at the postal worker.

The mailman reacts quickly, walking backward from the assailant, screaming, “Get away from me, man! Get away from me! Get away from me!”

No injuries were reported.

On Monday, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service asked anyone with information about the crime to contact them confidentially at 877-876-2455.

Last week, postal inspectors offered a pair of rewards that max out at $150,000 for information leading them to men who robbed other postal workers in the city:

  • At about 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, a robber confronted a letter carrier in the 6200 block of South Evans, according to the USPIS. After robbing the postal worker, he fled toward 63rd Street. Here are some photos of that suspect.
  • On September 30, around 6:40 p.m., someone robbed another postal worker in the 7700 block of South Laflin. Investigators released this photo of the suspect’s car but did not release any images of the robber.

Robberies of mail carriers have been a big problem in the city over the past couple of years. The workers are usually targeted for their master keys, which are then used by highly organized crime rings to steal mail and, from there, financial information and identities.
