CHICAGO — Police have detained a “person of interest” in connection with last week’s fatal shooting on a sidewalk near Clark and Fullerton in Lincoln Park.
Chicago police released surveillance images of a suspect on Tuesday evening, and that quickly generated leads for detectives. One tipster told CWBChicago that the man seen in the police photos regularly works out at his gym, located about a half-mile from the shooting scene.
“The dude is a weird one,” the reader said. “Always keeps to himself. All black clothing all the time. Brings his gym bag on the floor with him.”
No charges have been announced as of Thursday morning. It is unclear if police have detained the right man and, if they have, whether prosecutors will file charges after hearing his side of the story.
Alexander Nesteruk, 34, of Wheaton, was shot around 3:58 p.m. last Wednesday, November 27, in the 2400 block of North Clark, officials said. He died on Monday afternoon.
Ald. Timmy Knudsen (43rd) said in an email shortly after the shooting that Nesteruk was “exhibiting erratic and dangerous behavior at the time of the shooting and engaged with the offender aggressively before the incident.”
The alderman also said he believed the “victim and offender had a preexisting relationship.”
