CHICAGO — Prosecutors have charged a man with shooting an 11-year-old boy during a road rage altercation in Wicker Park two weeks ago. Jeston Harris, 27, will appear for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Christmas Eve.

The shooting occurred in the 1400 block of North Western Avenue at 8:27 a.m. on Friday, December 13. Shortly after the incident, Chicago police said the boy was riding in a vehicle when the driver, one of his grandparents, struck another car, causing minor damage. As the boy’s relative stepped out to exchange information, the driver of the first car opened fire, according to CPD.

A bullet hit the boy in his left hand. He was taken to Stroger Hospital and is in good condition.

More information about the shooting and the investigation will be released during Harris’ court appearance. He is charged with aggravated battery by discharging a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault by discharging a firearm.

Five people have been shot in Wicker Park and Bucktown this year, down from eight in 2023 and ten during 2022.
