CHICAGO — Police are looking for a known suspect after a man was shot on a Green Line platform in the Loop on Christmas Eve.
A witness ran up to officers working on an unrelated assignment to inform them of the shooting at the Clark-Lake station around 9:39 a.m. The cops found the victim, 45, lying outside the station’s entrance on Lake Street moments later.
The victim told police that he believed a man stole something from him and the man started shooting when he confronted him about the suspected theft. Police are looking for a 43-year-old suspect, a Black male who was last seen wearing a brown leather jacket with a gun inside a small brown Louis Vuitton bag. Officers found shell casings on the train platform, which also serves Brown, Orange, Pink, and Purple Line trains.
In a brief media statement, Chicago police said the victim was in critical condition with three gunshot wounds at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
So far this year, 14 people have been shot in the Loop, down from 16 at this point last year. While still high compared to long-term averages, the number of shootings in the downtown neighborhood has fallen from unheard-of numbers experienced during the COVID pandemic. The neighborhood had 39 shooting victims at this point in 2022 and 28 by this date in 2021.
