CHICAGO — A Waukegan man and a 16-year-old girl violently carjacked a couple after arranging to take the victims’ car on a test drive via Facebook Marketplace, prosecutors say.

Judge Shauna Boliker detained Fonocerio Edwards, 20, to await trial on two counts of vehicular hijacking.

A 38-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man met with Edwards and the girl in the 2800 block of West 63rd Street on December 23, according to Chicago police. The woman, who was trying to sell her blue 2011 Chevy Traverse via Facebook, allegedly agreed to meet Edwards there so he could inspect the vehicle.

But the encounter went sideways when Edwards pushed the woman out of the car’s driver’s seat and hopped behind the wheel, officials said on Tuesday. The woman quickly snatched the keys from the car’s ignition and started walking home, according to prosecutors. Along the way, she handed the keys to the 32-year-old man who joined her at the meet-up.

Edwards proceeded to hit the man in the head with an object, resulting in a laceration and the presence of “copious blood,” prosecutors said in a detention petition.

Sometime after the hijacking, but before he was arrested this week, police officers had an encounter with the carjacked vehicle and their body camera footage showed Edwards driving the Chevy, according to a CPD report.

No other details are available about the 16-year-old girl or the exact role she played in the hijacking because she is a juvenile. She is also charged with two counts of vehicular hijacking, according to CPD.
