CHICAGO — A gunman left two people critically injured inside an Edgewater apartment on Friday night, Chicago police said. The suspect, who is not entirely unknown to the victims, is still at large.
Officers responded to calls of a person shot inside an apartment in the 5800 block of North Kenmore around 10:50 p.m., according to a CPD media statement. The police found the second victim upon arrival.
CPD said a 25-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and a woman, age unknown, had been shot in the chin. They were both taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
The man told police that he returned fire toward the shooter, and police said they recovered a gun from a bed in the apartment.
Officers at the scene said the suspect was a Black man between 24 and 28 years old, 5’8” to 5’9” tall, with a slim build, who may live in Skokie. He wore a blue puffy coat with gray jeans.
CTA surveillance video showed a man matching that description boarding a northbound train at Thorndale shortly after the shooting. So far, though, no arrests have been made.
The victims are the third and fourth people shot in Edgewater this year. That compares to three victims at this point in 2024, all stemming from a single incident. Last year was one of the worst years for shootings in Edgewater in recent memory, with 20 people shot.
