Gunmen rob Loyola student, carjack driver nearby

CHICAGO — A Loyola University student was robbed at gunpoint, and a motorist was carjacked by the same crew in Rogers Park overnight, the latest in a flurry of robberies reported across the North Side this week.

Around 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, a man and woman, ages 33 and 31, were sitting inside their white Mercedes hatchback in the 6300 block of North Sheridan when a silver sedan pulled up. Three men exited the sedan, displayed guns, and ordered the victims to surrender their valuables and get out of the car, a Chicago police spokesperson said.

The armed men drove away with the victims’ car, followed by the sedan.

About 25 minutes later, the Loyola student was robbed at gunpoint by three men in the 6500 block of North Glenwood, according to the school’s public safety office. The crew took the student’s backpack, wallet, and phone, then escaped in the white Mercedes.

Earlier on Tuesday, an Uber driver was carjacked at gunpoint in Uptown. He told police he was in the 4300 block of North Broadway when several men forced him from his Nissan Sentra at gunpoint around 5:15 p.m.

Police are also investigating an armed robbery reported in Lakeview on Monday evening. A woman reported she was near the intersection of Cornelia and Lakewood when a masked man got out of a gray or silver sedan with a handgun. He took her phone and wallet, then fled in the vehicle, a CPD report said. A second person was seen inside the getaway car.

This week’s robberies mark a change from what the area has seen since the first of the year. CPD stats show that robbery reports are down 66% compared to last year in the Rogers Park (24th) District. Roberry reports are down 33% in the Town Hall (19th) District, which includes Lakeview and much of Uptown.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas.
