CHICAGO — A Mather High School student is charged with shooting another student on the Northwest Side two weeks ago. Uriel Arteaga, 17, was ordered detained as a public safety risk by Judge Antara Rivera.

Prosecutors told Rivera that Arteaga has a history of threatening other students and the 18-year-old victim knows Arteaga because they went to the same high school. However, it is unclear if they attend the same school this year.

Around 3:40 p.m. on February 18, the victim was walking to a parked car in the 6000 block of North Stevens when Arteaga rolled up in the passenger seat of a vehicle, according to the state’s detention petition.

Arteaga asked the victim’s name and then fired two or three shots from close range, striking the man in the abdomen, prosecutors said.

The victim was listed in critical condition, but he was able to identify Arteaga in a photo lineup.

Chicago police took Arteaga into custody at Mather, according to his arrest report.
