Gunmen mug 70-year-old man, targeted second victim nearby in afternoon robberies

CHICAGO — Armed robbers mugged a 70-year-old man and a second victim during separate crimes in West Town on Monday afternoon, according to Chicago police. The offenders remain on the loose.

The septuagenarian was in the 1900 block of West Huron when the robbery crew arrived in a gray car around 4:20 p.m., a CPD spokesperson said. They got out, displayed a gun, and took his keys, phone, and cash. Police said the victim was not injured.

Around 4:15 p.m., a nearly identical robbery occurred in the 800 block of North Wood. This time, a 25-year-old man was walking when a gray vehicle pulled up. The crew got out, displayed a gun, and took his phone, keys, and cash. Again, the victim was not injured.

Officers who spoke with the victims said the robbers were three or four Black males between 15 and 20 years old wearing ski masks. Based on video of one of the robberies, police were told one robber wore a red hoodie with white pants, another wore a red hoodie with black pants, and a third wore all black.

Police found the suspected getaway car abandoned in the 2700 block of West Hirsch about two hours after the second robbery. It had been reported stolen.

Robbery reports in the Near West (12th) District, which includes most of West Town, are down 11% year-over-year, with 81 cases reported as of March 2. That number also improved compared to 2023 and 2022, when almost-daily robbery sprees plagued the area.
