1 detained after armed men rob, carjack victims in Little Italy

CHICAGO — One suspect is in custody after a group of armed men carjacked two victims in Little Italy on Sunday evening.

Two men, ages 25 and 27, were standing in the 1200 block of West Taylor when a red car occupied by armed men pulled up next to them around 7:17 p.m., according to a Chicago police spokesperson.

At least three hijackers exited the car, displaying at least one gun as they demanded the victim’s property. Both men complied.

Most of the robbers fled in the red car, but at least one took off with a white 2014 Mercedes belonging to one of the victims.

Investigators began tracking the Mercedes as it passed license plate readers on city streets and, eventually, the Eisenhower Expressway. Officers in Hillside stopped the car and arrested one person, who was subsequently turned over to CPD.

The Chicago police spokesperson said the suspect remained in custody as of Monday morning.

Police suspect the red car that the robbers arrived in may be a Chevy Malibu linked to a carjacking that occurred earlier Sunday in Berwyn, according to preliminary information.
