A suburban woman stole more than $100,000 from grieving families while working for a Glenwood cemetery, officials said Saturday.

Latrecia Marshall-Parris, 48, helped families plan funerals and buy headstones, which are frequently paid for in cash, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. Marshall-Parris allegedly pocketed some of the money and deposited the rest into the cemetery’s account.

The cemetery notified authorities after discovering the scheme in August 2023, the sheriff’s office said. She has since been fired.

Investigators determined that Marshall-Parris swindled $114,200 by pocketing money 49 times between April 2022 and August 2023.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged her on Thursday with two counts of operating a continuing financial crime enterprise, felony theft, and felony theft by deception. She was released on Friday to await trial.
