One day after he shot and killed a beloved father and veteran postal worker on the Stevenson Expressway near downtown Chicago, Angel Reyes tried to sell the murder weapon, prosecutors said.

It’s been 13 months since a gunman killed 41-year-old Damian Dunning as he drove near the expressway’s junction with Lake Shore Drive around 10:15 p.m. on March 3, 2024. Since then, Illinois State Police investigators have been painstakingly piecing together a case, work that has culminated with Reyes’ arrest.

The gunman fired several shots at Dunning’s car, and some of the bullets veered off a witness’ windshield.

Prosecutors said the 24-year-old’s phone data placed him in the gunman’s vehicle. Investigators also found videos on Reyes’ phone showing him with the murder weapon at the time of the incident, officials said.

The next day, prosecutors said, Reyes tried to sell the firearm.

In February, ISP agents tried to stop a car Reyes was riding in, but the vehicle sped away. The agents gave chase and Reyes eventually bailed out of the car and ran away, but he was arrested a few minutes later, according to ISP. The agents allegedly found an AK-47 rifle in the car he ran from, and prosecutors charged him with aggravated possession of a weapon.

Investigators continued to work the expressway shooting and finally collected enough information to bring charges in Dunning’s death.

Judge Susana Ortiz detained Reyes on a count of first-degree murder.
