Smash-and-grab thieves raided a South Loop jewelry store on Tuesday afternoon, demolishing the display cases and getting away with, as one officer put it, “a lot” of jewelry.

Shortly after noon, four masked men entered Kay Jewelers, 1010 South Canal and used “blunt objects” like hammers to break the glass displays, according to Chicago police.

The crew gathered jewelry from the cases and escaped in at least one car waiting out front. Witnesses provided conflicting descriptions of the getaway car, with at least one saying it was a black Alfa Romeo while another said it may have been a gray sedan with damage on the driver’s side.

CPD did not release descriptions of the suspects.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas.
