An Innovations High School student traveled to another Chicago Public School to shoot a 14-year-old boy in an act of revenge, officials said.

Dequan Thomas, 17, is charged with attempted murder for the shooting outside Wendell Phillips Academy High School, 240 East Pershing, on May 7. Judge Antara Rivera ordered him detained pending trial, saying he “intentionally went to [the] school to get revenge.”

The victim was outside the school around 3 p.m. when he saw Thomas and started to run away, according to prosecutors. Thomas allegedly fired a 9-millimeter handgun at least four times, striking the boy in the right leg as he tried to escape.

Officials said the shooting was recorded on video and several people identified Thomas in images taken from the footage.

Thomas, who allegedly admitted to the shooting, has been arrested for gun possession before, according to a detention petition signed by Judge Rivera.

He is charged as an adult with attempted murder and aggravated battery by discharging a firearm.
