Carjacker gets 10 years for hijacking woman while wearing *two* ankle monitors

A Chicago man who carjacked a woman at gunpoint while wearing two electronic monitoring devices has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

Prosecutors said 32-year-old Keyruni Buford and another man ambushed a 47-year-old woman in the 7600 block of South Champlain Avenue around 2 a.m. on September 16, 2023. The woman was sitting inside her 2021 Nissan Sentra when the pair climbed in and forced her out of the driver’s seat at gunpoint.

Detectives tracked the stolen car to a nearby McDonald’s, where surveillance cameras captured Buford stepping out of the passenger seat, according to prosecutors.

Chicago police had a unique advantage in the investigation: Buford was already wearing electronic monitoring and GPS bracelets from a prior domestic battery case. Prosecutors said both ankle monitors placed him at the carjacking scene and matched his movements with the stolen Nissan.

CPD’s arrest report also cited Buford’s phone data, which pinged along with the car’s location. Investigators said they found a photo of the hijacked vehicle’s registration information saved on the device.

Also on the phone was a text message Buford sent bragging about the crime. When the other person asked who stole the car, Buford allegedly replied, “Me, LOL.”

Buford pleaded guilty on Friday to vehicular hijacking before Judge Kenneth Wadas. The judge sentenced him to ten years, though Buford will be eligible for release after serving half the time for good behavior. His term will be reduced further by 687 days of credit he earned while in the Cook County Jail.

Buford has appeared in CWBChicago’s reporting before.

In October 2016, he was one of three men accused of attacking and robbing a 64-year-old Boystown resident. Police said Buford had the victim’s credit cards and cash, while two co-defendants were caught with the man’s wallet and phone. Judge Timothy Chambers sentenced him to six years in prison in 2018.

At the time of that robbery, Buford was already on parole for mugging another Boystown resident in 2013.
