4 years for carjacking victim at gunpoint during Facebook Marketplace sale

Jaime Delgado (Cook County sheriff’s office)

A man who carjacked a woman and her father after arranging to buy their vehicle through Facebook Marketplace has been sentenced to four years in prison following a bench trial.

Prosecutors said a 27-year-old woman and her 56-year-old father met with the prospective buyer in the 6200 block of North Rockwell around 1 p.m. on March 1, 2024. After sliding behind the wheel of their 2020 Acura TLX, the would-be buyer pulled out a gun and aimed it at the woman. He then reversed into both victims, knocking them to the ground, before speeding away in the car, prosecutors said.

Detectives with the Chicago Police Department’s vehicular hijacking task force later traced the Acura to an auto repair shop in Berwyn. Officers saw 29-year-old Jamie Delgado step out of the driver’s seat and arrested him as he spoke with body shop employees, according to a police report. Both victims later picked Delgado out of photo lineups as the carjacker.

On June 20, Judge Shelley Sutker-Dermer found Delgado guilty of aggravated vehicular hijacking and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. She has now sentenced him to two concurrent four-year prison terms.

In a motion to reconsider sentencing, Delgado’s attorney called his client “a kindhearted family man” and characterized the four-year sentence as “excessive and in violation of his Constitutional Rights.”

The judge rejected the motion.
