Chicago is emerging from a violent Labor Day weekend during which 59 people were shot, eight fatally, and ninth homicide victim drowned in Lake Michigan. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 63.
While those numbers will likely change slightly as investigations progress and victims fight to recover, the curators of local crime data website HeyJackass say the performance currently stands as the fourth-worst Labor Day weekend since 2015. The years with worse performances were 2016 and 2021, which had 66 victims each, and 2022 with 62 victims.
CPD responded to three mass shootings over the weekend, defined as four or more people shot during a single event. Those three events accounted for nearly a quarter of the weekend’s casualties.
The largest of the three unfolded around 11:10 p.m. Saturday in the 3500 block of South State Street. Police said several gunmen opened fire from a passing vehicle into a group of people standing outside. Seven victims were taken to hospitals, all in good condition: a 28-year-old woman shot in the thigh, a 30-year-old man shot in the leg, a 30-year-old woman shot in the knee, a 30-year-old man shot in the thigh, a 31-year-old man shot in the foot, a 32-year-old man shot in the thigh, and a 28-year-old man shot in the buttocks.
Just two hours later, another drive-by occurred in Humboldt Park in the 2700 block of West Haddon Avenue around 1:11 a.m. Sunday. Police said multiple shooters in two cars sprayed gunfire at people outside. Four people were hit: a 39-year-old woman shot in the chest, a 39-year-old man shot in the neck, a 26-year-old woman shot in the leg, and a 32-year-old woman shot in the buttocks. All four were hospitalized in good condition.
At 1:03 a.m. Monday, machine gun fire ripped through a large crowd near 37th Street and Cottage Grove, leaving five people wounded. CPD said a “person of interest” was in custody. A 36-year-old woman was shot in the leg; a 17-year-old boy was hit multiple times and was in critical condition; a 33-year-old man was shot in the arm and leg and was in fair condition; a 26-year-old man was shot in the leg and is in good condition; and another 33-year-old man was shot in the arm and leg and was in good condition.

Editor’s note: HeyJackass data includes shootings that occur on expressways within city limits, which CPD does not count because the Illinois State Police investigates those incidents. For statistical purposes, the site defines the holiday “weekend” as noon Friday to 6 a.m. Tuesday. CPD also uses a narrower window as its definition of “weekend”: 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. Also, the weekend’s totals may rise or fall slightly as officials investigate incidents and victims succumb to injuries.
