Chicago police are questioning a store security guard after a 17-year-old girl was shot outside a South Loop Jewel-Osco on Tuesday night.

Officers responded to the store at 1224 South Wabash Avenue around 10:30 p.m. and found the teenager bleeding from a gunshot wound to her right thigh, according to CPD. Police applied a tourniquet before paramedics took her to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.

In a carefully worded statement, CPD said the shooting happened after “a weapon was produced and the firearm discharged” during a physical altercation between the girl and an “unknown offender.”

Witnesses reported that the shooter was a female security guard at the grocery store. Police detained a woman believed to be that guard in the 8100 block of South Saginaw Avenue less than an hour after the incident.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing multiple witnesses as they try to piece together what happened.
