Woman killed in knife attack at Avondale home, CPD says

A 55-year-old woman was fatally stabbed inside her Avondale home on Wednesday afternoon, and Chicago police are investigating whether the killing was domestic-related.

Officers were called to the 2800 block of North Woodard Street around 4:15 p.m. and found the victim with stab wounds to her face, neck, arm, and chest, according to preliminary information from CPD.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Vanessa Hernandez and listed the Woodard address as her home.

Police said Hernandez was involved in a “physical altercation with an unknown male offender” who pulled a knife and attacked her. Investigators recovered a knife from the rear porch area as evidence.

Officers were told to be on the lookout for a Hispanic man in his mid-20s to early 30s, wearing a black beanie cap and a red shirt. He was last seen walking south on Woodard Street after the stabbing.

As of Thursday morning, no arrests had been announced.
