Chicago police are warning rideshare and food delivery drivers to be on alert in parts of North Lawndale after investigators determined a robbery crew has been targeting them in a series of holdups and carjackings over the past three weeks.
According to a community alert from CPD, the same group of robbers is believed responsible for at least five incidents since mid-October, often using rideshare or delivery apps to lure drivers into traps.
In three of the cases, the robbers ordered rides through Uber or Lyft, rode to their destinations, and then produced handguns or threatened violence to take the drivers’ vehicles.
In another incident, police said the robbers ordered food through a delivery app. When the driver arrived with the order, one of the offenders got into the driver’s car and took off.
A fifth robbery involved male offenders who approached a victim on foot, displayed a black handgun, and demanded property before fleeing.
Detectives have linked the same crew to the following attacks:
- 1000 block of South Springfield Avenue on October 18 at 12:05 a.m.
- 1500 block of South Keeler Avenue on October 19 at 4:15 a.m.
- 4200 block of West Fillmore Street on November 2 at 5:10 p.m.
- 1500 block of South Kedvale Avenue on November 2 at 8:15 p.m.
- 1400 block of South Karlov Avenue on November 5 at 12:39 a.m.
Police described the offenders as up to four Black males, ages 16 to 25, wearing dark clothing and black ski masks.
