Two men were hospitalized after a violent axe attack and a separate beating near the South Loop early Monday morning, Chicago police said.
According to CPD, officers on patrol around 2 a.m. saw a 44-year-old man standing in the middle of the street at Jefferson and Maxwell streets with multiple injuries. The man told officers he was attacked by two men, one of whom was armed with an axe. The assailants fled before police arrived.
Chicago Fire Department paramedics treated the man and took him to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. Police said he suffered cuts to his forehead, wrists, back, and ankle, as well as two broken wrists and a broken ankle, according to an initial assessment.
While officers were still investigating, they encountered another victim nearby. A 40-year-old man told police he was walking on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of South Canal when an armed man on a bicycle approached, struck him several times with an unknown object, and stole his belongings. That victim also sustained head lacerations and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
Officers recovered a bloody axe at the corner of Jefferson and Maxwell streets. A witness described the attackers as two Hispanic men, one wearing a dark green jacket and the other with a green wrap around his head.
No one was in custody as of Monday morning, according to CPD.
