Bucktown burglar caught after stealing keys with active AirTag: report

Gonzalez-Rivera

A burglar who slipped into a Bucktown home before dawn on Friday probably had no idea he was walking out with a tracking device in his pocket. That mistake led Chicago police straight to him less than an hour later.

According to a CPD report, officers used an AirTag attached to a stolen keychain to track down 47-year-old Angel Gonzalez-Rivera after the break-in.

Around 4:30 a.m., a family member saw the intruder appear on their home security feed in the 1700 block of North Honore Street and called 911. Video later showed the man wandering through the house for more than ten minutes.

Officers reviewed the video and broadcast a detailed description of the man while noting that he had unknowingly taken an active AirTag along with the keys and other items he grabbed on the way out.

Police followed the signal about a mile west to the 1500 block of North Maplewood Avenue, where they found Gonzalez-Rivera, the report said. Judge James Murphy III released him on electronic monitoring to await trial.
