Six people, two adults and four juveniles, are in police custody in connection with the fatal stabbing of a homeless man in the Loop on Sunday morning, according to a law enforcement source. Two of the juveniles are 13 and 14 years old, the source said.

A passerby called 911 after finding the man lying unresponsive in the 200 block of South Wabash Street around 7:21 a.m., police said. Paramedics began CPR and other life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The man, whose name and age have not been determined, died from a stab wound to the back, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Based on the collection of personal effects found at the scene, responding officers concluded that the victim was homeless.

According to our source, the six people in custody are mostly, if not entirely, part of the same family. It was not clear how many of them, if any, would end up being charged with the man’s death.

Additional details about the suspects that have not yet been independently confirmed by CWBChicago suggest that, if charges are filed, the case will likely draw significant media coverage.

The murder on Wabash Street was part of a particularly violent weekend in the Loop. On Friday evening, nine people were shot in two separate incidents following the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. One of those victims, 14-year-old Armani Floyd, died.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas.
