Chicago police officers shot a man who opened fire on them after he shot a woman in Chatham on Friday night, according to the police department. CWBChicago has learned that the suspect is a six-time convicted felon who has been on parole since being released from prison in September.
Officers initially responded to a 911 call reporting an intoxicated man slashing tires with two knives in the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue around 7:46 p.m. As officers were responding, they received an updated call: The armed man had fired shots at a woman and flattened all of her tires.
Police arrived almost immediately after receiving the update and quickly engaged the suspect in a foot chase in the alley. Here’s how the next few moments sounded on the local police radio channel:
During the chase, the suspect allegedly fired at pursuing officers, who returned fire, striking him multiple times, police said.
The 28-year-old suspect received multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition, CPD said. State records show he was released from prison in September after serving part of a three-year sentence he received for resisting police. His previous felony convictions resulting in prison sentences include bribery, aggravated battery of a peace officer, and aggravated domestic battery, according to his prison record.
Officers found a 23-year-old woman inside a nearby apartment with two gunshot wounds to her arm, police said. She was in good condition at the University of Chicago Hospital, according to CPD. Investigators also found shell casings in the residence and noticed bullet holes in the walls.
Two officers were taken to hospitals for observation, but they were not shot or seriously injured, police said. All officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days per CPD policy.
