A Chicago man accused of breaking into a Naperville home where his ex-girlfriend was visiting, only to be confronted and detained by several men who held him until police arrived, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Tuesday.
At about 4 a.m. on August 6, 2022, Adam Stone, 28, went to a Naperville home where his ex-girlfriend was visiting and broke a basement window to gain entry, Berln said. Once inside, he fought with the occupants before they forced him outside.
About 15 minutes after being removed from the home, Stone threw a landscape brick through the front window and threw additional bricks at vehicles parked in the driveway, according to Berlin. Naperville police responded to the scene and found “several men” holding Stone down outside the residence.
Stone’s mugshot from the night of his arrest shows his left eye blackened.
Stone was found guilty following a two-day bench trial that concluded on April 22, 2025, with Judge Margaret O’Connell presiding. She found him guilty of two counts of home invasion, a Class X felony.
At the time of the home invasion, Stone was on probation out of Cook County after pleading guilty to aggravated domestic battery charges. He has been in DuPage County custody since being arrested in the home invasion case.
“We all have the right to feel safe and secure in our homes,” Berlin said in a statement. “Our homes are our sanctuaries that provide us with safety and security and when Mr. Stone broke into the victim’s home, he not only shattered the feeling of security the homeowners previously enjoyed, he also set an entire community on edge.”
Berlin said the 20-year sentence “sends the crystal-clear message that in DuPage County, we will not stand for this type of violent behavior and anyone engaged in such behavior will find themselves facing serious consequences.”
