A man is in custody after he allegedly ambushed Chicago police officers, opening fire on two squad cars as cops investigated a prostitution complaint in Gresham early Monday morning. The officers, who were not injured, did not return fire and successfully apprehended the gunman after a pursuit, CPD said.
The incident began around 6:03 a.m. in the 7500 block of South Peoria Street, where officers from the Englewood (7th) District were inside two marked patrol cars responding to a complaint about prostitution in the area.
According to preliminary information from CPD, a man on foot began shooting toward the officers and then into the air. He then got into a black Nissan SUV and fled. Officers pursued the vehicle, which eventually crashed into two vehicles in the 7600 block of South Union Avenue. One of the struck vehicles wound up on its side on the sidewalk, but no injuries were reported.
The gunman tried to run away, but he didn’t get far. Cops took him into custody and also recovered a firearm from the middle of the street in the 7500 block of South Union. Officers also found about seven shell casings at the original shooting scene.
CPD said the suspect was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital for observation and remains in police custody. Two officers were taken to an area hospital for observation and have since been released.
No charges have been announced as of Monday evening.
