Armed men carjacked a Lyft driver in West Town before attempting to rob a late-night taco stand in Bucktown about 45 minutes later Sunday morning, according to a pair of Chicago police reports.
The rideshare driver told officers he received a ride request in the 2300 block of West Fulton Street and picked up three men shortly after 3 a.m. When they reached the 2100 block of West Walnut Street, at least one of the passengers displayed a gun and announced a robbery, according to preliminary information.
The men took the driver’s phone and wallet, forced him out of his Nissan, and drove off with the car. Chicago Police Department license plate readers tracked the vehicle onto the outbound Kennedy Expressway. Officers at the scene described the suspects as three Black men between 18 and 22 years old wearing hoodies and face masks.
Around 3:40 a.m., the same car was spotted in Bucktown when two men walked into Arturo’s Tacos at 2001 North Western Avenue and announced a robbery. One man displayed a rifle while the other had a handgun, according to a preliminary report.
The two got scared off and abandoned the robbery before taking anything, then returned to the stolen Nissan and fled. The car last hit a license plate reader in the 3500 block of West Wrightwood Avenue, an officer said. No arrests have been reported.
