Suspected gang members fired at Chicago police officers who tried to stop their vehicle in Brighton Park early Saturday, prompting an officer to return fire during a chase that ended in a crash and the arrests of three suspects, according to Chicago police and sources.
A Deering (9th) District tactical team tried to stop a vehicle carrying two men and a woman for an investigation in the 4400 block of South Mozart Avenue around 1:12 a.m., but the driver didn’t pull over, police said. During the pursuit, at least one person inside the vehicle fired shots at officers, according to CPD.
Police continued chasing the vehicle until it crashed in the 2900 block of West 47th Street, the department said. The three occupants then ran from the car.
As officers moved in, one of the suspects fired additional shots at police, and an officer returned fire, according to CPD. No one was struck by gunfire. Investigators recovered two firearms at the scene.
Officers arrested all three occupants, who sources identified as suspected members. Police said all three were taken to hospitals with minor injuries suffered in the crash. One officer was also transported to a hospital for observation, according to CPD.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the police use of force. CPD said the officers involved will be assigned to administrative duties for at least 30 days under department policy.
